A Visual Reminder of Eternity

One Sunday morning, our pastor stretched a rope across the stage. On the very tip was a tiny strip of red tape. That tape represented our life here on earth—short, fragile, fleeting. The rest of the rope stretched on and on, representing eternity.

It was a sobering reminder: “You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes” (James 4:14). Yet so often, we spend our time stressing, striving, and pouring energy into things that won’t last.

As moms—especially those raising children through foster care or adoption—life can feel like an endless cycle of tasks: therapies, schoolwork, behaviors, appointments, meals, laundry. These things are necessary, but if we’re not careful, they can blind us to what matters most.

Shifting Focus: How to Live Beyond the Tape

1. Anchor Your Day in Scripture

God’s Word is alive and active (Hebrews 4:12). Even a single verse can shift your perspective.
Try this: Choose a theme verse for the week with your kids. Repeat it together at breakfast or bedtime.

2. Filter Tasks Through Eternity

Ask yourself: Will this matter in five years? Will this matter in eternity?
Example: Instead of stressing over a spotless house, spend that time connecting with your child—or praying over them.

3. Invest in Relationships Over Routines

Kids won’t remember perfect schedules, but they will remember feeling loved, seen, and wanted. For adoptive and foster families, connection often outweighs correction.
Try this: End the day with a simple 5-minute connection ritual—ask your kids their “high” and “low” of the day, and pray over them.

4. Guard Your Heart from Distractions

Social media, comparison, and busyness can trap us into living for the tape. Scripture calls us to “set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2).
Try this: Choose one intentional boundary this week—limit scrolling, protect a family night, or say “no” to something lesser so you can say “yes” to what matters most.

5. Practice Eternal Gratitude

Gratitude lifts our eyes from the tape to the rope. Thank God not just for today’s blessings, but for the eternal hope we have in Christ.
Try this: Keep a Kingdom Journal—write down both daily blessings and the ways you see God shaping hearts (yours and your children’s).

Final Thought

Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 9:25 that we are training for a crown that lasts forever. Eternity reframes everything.

That rope doesn’t end. Our greatest calling is not found in what’s urgent, but in what’s eternal.

👉 Let’s live today not for the red tape, but for the rope.
